Choosing A Reputable Contractor

Ready to sell, but your house needs some work?

Maybe it's that backyard you thought you'd get to, which now looks more like the Amazon Jungle than a place for entertaining and relaxation. Or maybe it's that outdated master bathroom that you've been putting off remodeling. You know..the one with the floral wallpaper and carpeted (yes, carpeted😶) flooring?

Whatever updates your home needs, chances are you're going to need to hire out for the job. If you're investing a big chunk of time and money into a remodel project, you've got to make it count, and that means finding someone you can trust.

A great contractor is easy to talk to, knowledgeable, upfront about costs, and is fully licensed and insured. Follow these tips to ensure you've got the right person for the job and that you're prepared for a remodel project:

  1. Shop around, but don't be too frugal.
Price can often reflect quality of work when it comes to home improvement projects. Maintain realistic expectations of cost, and remember that you get what you pay for. Remember to check for references and reviews!
  2. Make sure you see eye to eye.
Let the contractor know your goals for the project exactly, and keep in touch about progress on a very regular basis.
  3. Get all contracts in writing!!
This one can't be said enough. Get it in writing. Get it in writing. GET. IT. IN. WRITING. We've all had a friend or family member with a contracting horror story. Protect yourself legally with an iron-clad contract, and avoid getting left in the lurch with a half finished project.
  4. Be upfront about your budget.
You should also be transparent about the amount of money you have to spend. Often times projects can be broken up into phases, giving you more time to save and get the job done right.
  5. Know what you're signing up for.
This one kinda goes without saying, but we'll say it. If you've hired a crew to do some work inside or outside of your home, you should be prepared for a construction environment.

Be ready for some loud noises and people coming and going. It's also a good idea to make some space for their equipment and tools.
  6. Check to make sure all agreements in the contract are met before signing off.
It's helpful to schedule a final walkthrough to make sure all the terms of the contract (the one you definitely have because you played it smart) have been met. If there's something that isn't quite up to par with the set expectations, you can both address it together.
